Description
In our current world where we are more connected than ever, it is inevitable that fake or inaccurate news starts to spread. In our local context, the Singaporean government introduced a legislative law that aims to stop the spread of fake news, POFMA. However, we (being computer scientists) believe that the issue can also be tackled from a technological standpoint.
The impact of fake news is not just political, but can also be personal, where more vulnerable / susceptible individuals are targets of scams, lured in by misinformation. By developing tools that can accurately classify misinformation, we believe we would be applying our newly-learnt NLP knowledge to a task relevant to today's world. With a generously large dataset, as well as the opportunity to develop additional datasets via web scraping, this is an excellent opportunity to learn more about NLP techniques and to work with real-world data.
